Two new art installations planned for Lake Odessa in 2025! Beginning in 2024, the Lake Odessa Area Arts Commission (LOAAC) and the Lake Odessa Downtown Development Authority (DDA) began collaborating to bring one or more mural displays to the community. After reviewing a number of potential sites, both boards settled on two locations and agreed to equally share in the project cost.
One large-scale mural will be located on the south-facing wall at Simple Truth Chiropractic, 1001 Fourth Avenue. The mural will measure approximately 23 feet wide times 8 feet high, with a ten-foot center panel, for a total area of 192 square feet.
Artist Dan Arens from Pewamo, Michigan, was commissioned to create the downtown mural. Instead of the mural being painted directly onto the wall’s brick surface, Arens will create his artwork off site on 4’ x 8’ metal panels, followed with a topcoat of UV-protective sealer. The panels will then be mounted to the wall surface by the Village’s Department of Public Works. New light fixtures will be installed to provide nighttime illumination.
The mural will depict Lake Odessa’s past and present, showcasing the town’s three core themes: the importance of rail travel to the history of Lake Odessa; Jordan Lake as a vital natural and recreational resource; and Lake Odessa’s agricultural roots. As a part of the overall design, Arens will add an image of a bass leaping out of the lake to snag a fishing lure. The general public is invited to enter a contest to vote for one of several fishing lures. The lure receiving the most votes will be featured in the mural.
The second mural will be located on the west-facing wall of a small wellhouse building at the entrance to Lake Odessa’s municipal beach. This mural will measure approximately 8’ square for a total dimension of 64 square feet. Lake Odessa artist Dave Kippen has been selected to create this mural, and has developed three preliminary designs, with the general public having the opportunity to vote for their favorite. Like the downtown mural, the mural at the beach will also be painted on metal panels and nighttime illumination will be added.
